2. Creatures of Habit
2024
Graphite on paper
Gestures disperse in the air unless some instrument - like a pencil - memorializes them. My artwork memorializes gestures to increase awareness of human habits, which then encourages people to move through the world less passively. I hope my work will promote more intimate relationships between people and their surroundings. Spatial passivity is the main issue I am targeting through my investigation of habit. Habits often cause people to disconnect from their surroundings. We mindlessly sign our names, and move, without social interaction, through public spaces. My work is not anti-habit. In fact, habits often allow for the formation of intimate connections to a person or place. Issues arise when habits become institutionalized. An investigation of habit is pertinent to the current moment because of the contemporary condition of spatial passivity. The ubiquity of technology brings forth a habitual passivity in humanity.
