Creatures of Habit
Graphite on paper Habits can cause people to disconnect from their surroundings. But they also allow for the formation of intimate connections to a person or place. An abstract problem requires an abstract solution.

I turned this abstraction into a design study of dots and lines that celebrate the beauty in the repetitive motions that make up our daily habits.

“A line goes out for a walk, so to speak, aimlessly, for the sake of the walk” - Paul Klee
The works were displayed in a stairwell at Scripps College to highlight the importance of architecture on our spatial habits. I chose this placement to bring viewers’ attention to the staircase as a transitory space that is generally moved through passively and habitually.
The viewers’ potential inability to decipher the meaning of these works suspends them in a productive tension, causing them to question perceived patterns and, thus, habits.
Grid-like patterns emphasize the physical and metaphorical confines, including social pressures or architecture, which cause the formation of habits.
